Soma and Surly bikes represent all things sacred at FreeRange. They are simple, robust, thoughtfully designed steel frames spec'ed with smart, proven equipment for a fair price.

Start with a good frame. Soma uses Reynolds 631 tubing for most of their frames, while Surly uses TIG-welded 4130 cro-moly. Both provide a stable, comfortable ride unmatched by aluminum, with a longer life than carbon fiber and a price well below titanium. Soma and Surly frames are affordably priced too, starting at $410, well below the cost of a custom-built frame made from any material.

With frames that fit regular road wheels (700c) in sizes as small as 42cm and as big as 66cm Soma has made finding a bike in your size easy and affordable. We have built up bikes for folks barely over 5 feet and for people 6'4" and taller. The smaller frames are a welcome choice for cyclists who had previously thought their only option for a decent, well fitting bike was an expensive custom frame or a bike with the harder to find 650c wheel size. Surly frames run from 42cm to 62cm and offer wide chainstays designed to accommodate wider tires and fenders. Winters in the Northwest are notoriously wet. Roads are saturated and often pitted with wheel eating potholes. Running a bigger tire gives the bike a smooth ride over the worst Seattle streets and fenders keep riders warmer and dryer. Here at FreeRange we set up Soma and Surly bikes for individual riders. Is there a seat, or a handlebar you won't ride without? Do you need extra low gearing or a second set of brake levers?
